Caleb saw the light on in the office at the big house. “Gramps?”

Hesitating for a second, he turned the wheel of his SUV and headed away from the small backroad leading to his house and toward the cluttered driveway of pickup trucks.

He barely shut off the engine and got out before he saw the front door open—an arch of light spilling onto the porch—and his grandfather’s big, burly silhouette outlined in the frame waiting for him.

“Son, everything all right?”

“Isn’t it past your bedtime, Gramps?” The clock might blare three fifty, but his body swore it was more like five or six. He ached all over, including deep behind his ribcage. His boots hit the path and then up the steps.

“Haven’t been able to sleep a full night since your grandmother...”

Caleb nodded, knowing the truth. Lonely thrummed through the house most days.

“Quiet now. Sweet Potato just started snoring.”

Chuckling low, Caleb should be grateful for the miniature horse soothing Gramps’ pain. He wiped his feet before crossing the threshold and then closed the door behind him. “He running the ranch now?”

“Just about.” Gramps led the way to the office.

It took a few minutes of meandering through the darkened living room and the big furniture there and smaller rooms until he followed Gramps into this book-lined office. The big, oak desk—still littered with papers—sat forlornly close by. The leather and cowhide chairs on the other side of the room welcomed them.

“Sit a spell. I’ll get the good stuff.” He went to a cabinet and grabbed two glasses and a bottle with amber liquid in it.

“None for me. You have some, though.” How could he tell his grandfather what he’d gone and done tonight?

“Sonny stopped by a few hours ago on his way to the bunkhouse.”

Or maybe he didn’t even have to now...

“By the look on your face, I’d say he was telling the truth and there’s another McCall wedding coming up.” His glee could barely be contained. He nodded to a sleeping Sweet Potato on the quilt by the chair. “I’d be jumping for joy and kicking my heels together if I didn’t think it would wake him up.”

Something unfurled in his gut, that knot of worry for his beloved grandfather perhaps. He wanted to see Gramps smiling from ear-to-ear like this for years to come. “She wants a baby.”

“But not a husband. Yeah, yeah, I heard all that. Now, what’s our next move, son?”

“Plotting, Gramps?”

“If it will do any good, yes.”

“She wants love.” It was as if lightning came out of the sky, through the roof, and struck him.

Hope swirled inside him. That was what had been missing for her for years now. If she’d gotten it with either one of those losers she’d been engaged to before, she’d have stayed and toughed it out. She would have fought for love. But she hadn’t found it there. Maybe something tugged her back to her hometown of Honor over and over again to find it.

Jenny wanted love.

For a lifetime.
